Robert Burns House – The Poet's Home and Afternoon Tea
A few hours, from Dumfries station and back.
The route
Robert Burns spent his last years in a plain red sandstone house on a quiet Dumfries street, now a small, free museum of his family's life.
A few minutes' walk away, the Cairndale Hotel serves a classic afternoon tea of finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones and homemade cakes in its lounge.

An unhurried afternoon in the poet's last home, then a long, comfortable tea a few streets away.

Robert Burns House
An attraction
It's 14 minutes' walk from Dumfries station to Robert Burns House on Burns Street. It's free and, from October to March, opens Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm, so come for its 2pm reopening. Burns lived here with his family from 1793 and died here in 1796. The rooms show how they lived, with his manuscripts in glass cases and, upstairs, the window pane he scratched his name on; children can try on costume and hats of the 1790s. Four steps with handrails lead up to the door, and the four upstairs rooms are up a narrow stair. His mausoleum stands 4 minutes away in St Michael's kirkyard, and you can see it from outside at any time.
