When Littledean Tower was still inhabited, it was said to be haunted by the spirit of an old lady. In life, she had been cruel to the people of Maxton and her only goal was to hoard as much money as possible rather than help those who needed it. The family that lived in the castle had little interest in the supernatural and would ignore any signs of the ghost.

That was until a kitchen girl working late one night saw a strange light out the corner of her eye. Turning to face it, an old woman was suddenly standing by her shoulder complaining about the cold. Instead of being afraid, the kitchen girl invited her to sit by the fire and offered to clean and dry the woman’s clothes.

Surprised by the kindness, the mysterious stranger admitted that she was the castle ghost. Her spirit was unable to rest because of the gold she had hidden and the way she had treated the poor people who needed aid. The vast wealth was still untouched, buried under the lowest step of the tower.

The ghost gave the girl directions on where to find her stashed treasure and instructions on what the laird should do with it. He was to keep half of it and give the girl a quarter. The final quarter was to be shared amongst the poorest of Maxton as reparation for her treatment.

The people no longer cursed the memory of the old lady and Littledean Tower was finally free of its resident ghost.
