Millport

Millport

Great Cumbrae's pretty bay, Britain's smallest cathedral, and a rock painted as a crocodile.

It’s a 10-minute CalMac ferry ride from Largs to Great Cumbrae, two miles from the mainland. The main town, Millport, wraps around a pretty bay, gazing out over Little Cumbrae, the Eileans, Ailsa Craig and the Ayrshire hills. A few hundred yards back from the seafront you can see the pointy spire of Britain’s smallest cathedral: the 19th-century Cathedral of the Isles, with room for just 100 worshippers. Also look out for the cherry and navy stripes of Crocodile Rock on Millport beach. It was painted more than a century ago by local man Robert Brown who, after enjoying a few pints at the pub, noticed that a group of rocks along the shore resembled a crocodile.
