Bridge to Nowhere

Bridge to Nowhere

A walkway over Glasgow's M8 at Anderston, left hanging unfinished for four decades.

For four decades it hung there in mid-air – a footbridge that curved up from ground level then stopped, abruptly, as if it wasn’t convinced it was going the right way. The so-called Bridge to Nowhere was a footbridge begun in the 1970s that would, in theory, allow the pedestrians of the Anderston area to pass above the busy M8 motorway below. Construction work came to an abrupt halt, however, when funding ran out, leaving the unfinished structure marooned some 40ft in the air. And so it remained, as a Glasgow landmark of sorts and a kind of totem of failed civic planning, until finally being completed in 2013.
