The Borders area is full of legends of supernatural creatures, especially fairies. While the stories vary wildly, the message is usually the same – always treat them well and never get on their bad side.
One farm near Bedrule was in a bit of trouble. They were running out of flour, but the harvest was still weeks away. Without freshly baked bread, the farm workers would be going hungry and they might end up with no harvest at all. Unexpectedly, a little old lady dressed in green appeared at the door of the farm one day begging for just a cup of flour.
The mistress of the house took one look at the old lady and knew she was one of the fairy folk. It was never wise to turn them away empty handed, so she scooped up her last cup of flour. It was all they had left but she still gave it away with a sad smile.
The very next day, the old lady knocked on the door again and returned what she had borrowed. The mistress thought it peculiar but poured the flour back into the meal chest anyway. It looked like just a small pile but no matter how many times the woman scooped the flour up, it wasn’t running out.
Due to one act of kindness for a complete stranger, the farm at Bedrule was able to bake as much bread as they needed throughout the entire harvest.
