A street back from the harbour, a stone inn with bay windows cooks fresh seafood, from langoustines to fish, and its cosy bar has live music, quiz nights and local gins and ales. On the harbour front, a family-run hotel with a smart black-and-white front serves seafood and Highland steaks, and many of its rooms look out over the loch. Book a table in summer, and stroll in along the shore.

Laurie Goodlad, a fisherman's daughter, joined the long queue at The Seafood Shack, a food trailer behind the harbour in Ullapool.

‘Diners can choose to take their food away or eat it at one of the wooden benches outside the trailer. We were lucky enough to get a table, and the sun was shining, which was a bonus. What The Seafood Shack proves is that seafood doesn’t have to be complicated. You don’t need a vast kitchen or a swanky West End restaurant.’

The Plockton Hotel.

With its smart black-and-white front on the harbour, the Plockton Hotel is hard to miss. It is a warm, family-run place, and many of its rooms look straight out over Loch Carron to the hills. The kitchen serves home-cooked food, with seafood from these waters and Highland steaks, and the lively bar has won awards of its own. It suits a lunch after a wander round the village as well as a long evening by the water. Park where you can and stroll in along the shore.
