The galleries here are relaxed places to look at contemporary Scottish art, and nobody minds if you are only browsing. On Ancaster Square in Callander, a family-run gallery fills a converted stone house with bold, colourful paintings, jewellery, glass and ceramics. In the old spa town of Bridge of Allan, a gallery behind a bright blue shopfront has shown Scottish painters since 1997, with jewellery among the paintings. Stirling's own art gallery and museum adds its collection and a changing run of exhibitions on Dumbarton Road. Opening days vary through the week and the seasons, so check before a special trip.

The Stirling Smith Art Gallery & Museum.

The Stirling Smith is the city's own museum and art gallery, a handsome classical building in its own gardens on Dumbarton Road, an easy walk from the Old Town. It opened in 1874, paid for by a bequest from the painter Thomas Stuart Smith, and it was built to show art and objects side by side. The Stirling Story display walks you through the town's past, from its royal centuries to everyday life. Around it hang paintings, including Smith's own, alongside a changing run of exhibitions. The much-loved Easy Tiger sculpture has joined the collection too. Admission is free.

The Stirling Heads, oak portraits carved for a royal ceiling at Stirling Castle, were scattered in 1777, and most are now back in the castle.

They were carved around 1540, in the reign of James V, each roughly 74 centimetres to a metre across, and show Scottish royals, figures from myth such as Hercules, and Roman emperors. In 1777 the ceiling was taken down, and the heads went to local magistrates and collectors, while some were lost for good. Counts vary, but around 38 are known to survive. Most are now shown in their own gallery on the upper floor of the Palace, and replica carvings, painted from traces of their original colour, were made when the Palace was restored in 2010.

The Kelpies.

Two horse heads of gleaming steel rise thirty metres over the Forth and Clyde Canal in Helix Park, on the edge of Falkirk, a thrilling sight up close. The Glasgow-born sculptor Andy Scott made them, and they were unveiled in 2014. One bows its head to the water and the other throws it back towards the sky. They honour the Clydesdale, the heavy horse that hauled barges along the canals and powered the industries of this part of Scotland. Walk all the way round on the paths by the water, or join a short guided tour to see inside. Come back after dark, when they are lit up.
