Portree: Getting around

Reaching Portree involves a journey through some of Scotland’s most spectacular scenery. The most common route is by car, crossing to the island via the Skye Bridge from Kyle of Lochalsh. Scottish Citylink operates long-distance bus services connecting Portree with Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Inverness. The nearest train station is in Kyle of Lochalsh, from where you can take a bus across the bridge to Skye.

Getting around The town of Portree itself is small and best explored on foot. The centre can be easily covered in a short amount of time, with a steeper walk down the hill to reach the harbour. To explore the wider Isle of Skye and its famous attractions like the Old Man of Storr, the Quiraing, or the Fairy Pools, a car is highly recommended as it offers the most flexibility.

Public Transport Stagecoach operates the bus services on the Isle of Skye. Routes connect Portree with the island’s main villages and some of the key tourist sites. Services can be infrequent, especially outside of the peak summer season, so it is essential to check timetables carefully when planning your day. The main bus station is located in Somerled Square.

Driving & Parking Portree is the hub of Skye’s road network. Parking within the town centre can be extremely challenging, particularly from May to September. There are two main pay-and-display car parks: one off the A855 on the way into town, and another larger car park off the A87 towards the south end of town. It is advisable to arrive early or be prepared to park on the outskirts and walk in.
