Portree is a small, walkable town, its character defined by its stunning natural harbour and the busy streets of its centre.
The Harbour Portree is best known for its historic harbour. This is where you’ll find the famous row of colourful houses, with the view from the opposite pier being the most sought-after photograph in town. It remains a working harbour, with local fishing boats landing their daily catch. It's the most scenic part of town, home to several excellent seafood restaurants and the departure point for local boat trips.
The Town Centre The main part of the town is perched on the cliff above the harbour. Somerled Square is the central hub, from which a number of small streets branch out. This area contains the bulk of the town’s shops, galleries, pubs, and cafés. It's a lively and practical centre, where you can find everything from outdoor gear and handmade crafts to local books and provisions for a day of hiking.
The Lump The Lump is the wooded peninsula that forms the southern side of Portree’s bay. It provides a wonderful, easily accessible green space with a network of paths offering fantastic views back towards the town and the Cuillin mountains. At its highest point stands the Apothecary's Tower, a historic folly that adds to the area's charm. It makes an easy short walk, with views back over the town.
