While Pitlochry is a town, not a city, it has distinct areas that offer different experiences, from the lively town centre to the tranquil beauty of its waterside and the wildness of the surrounding hills.
The Town Centre The main thoroughfare, Atholl Road, is the heart of Pitlochry. This long street is where you’ll find the majority of shops, pubs, and restaurants, all housed in handsome Victorian buildings. It's a place for browsing independent bookshops and outdoor gear suppliers, finding Scottish gifts, and soaking up the friendly atmosphere.
The River, Loch & Dam Just south of the town centre lies a hub of natural and man-made wonders. A walk across the impressive Pitlochry Dam offers fantastic views and leads to the famous Fish Ladder, where you may be lucky enough to see salmon making their incredible journey. From here, a beautiful, well-maintained path circumnavigates Loch Faskally, leading to the renowned Pitlochry Festival Theatre, which is beautifully situated on the banks of the river.
The Surrounding Hills & Woodlands Marked trails, known as the Pitlochry Path Network, run into the hills and woods around the town. One of the most popular walks is the ascent of Craigower hill, which rewards walkers with a spectacular panoramic view of the town and Loch Tummel. These woodlands are particularly famous in autumn when the trees erupt into a fiery display of gold, red, and orange, making it a major destination for "leaf-peeping."
