North Berwick: Areas

North Berwick is a compact and walkable town, with its main features clustered around the waterfront and its lively centre.

The Harbour & Seabird Centre The historic harbour is the focal point of the town’s maritime life. It remains a working harbour for a small number of local fishing boats and is the main departure point for boat trips out to the islands. Overlooking the harbour is the Scottish Seabird Centre, where live cameras let visitors zoom in on the wildlife on the Bass Rock and surrounding islands without disturbing the birds.

The High Street Running parallel to the sea, North Berwick’s High Street is the town’s cheerful and thriving commercial heart. Unlike many towns, it is dominated by a superb collection of independent businesses, including boutique clothing stores, art galleries, bookshops, delis, and gift shops. The shops give the High Street its own character and make for good browsing.

The Beaches North Berwick is blessed with two main sandy beaches. To the west of the harbour is the West Bay, a long, sweeping stretch of sand perfect for walking. To the east is Milsey Bay, a popular spot for families, with a tidal swimming pool and views of the Bass Rock. Both beaches offer beautiful golden sands and are ideal for enjoying the fresh sea air and stunning coastal scenery.

North Berwick Law This conical hill, a volcanic plug like the Bass Rock, rises to 187 metres just south of the town. A well-maintained path leads to the summit, and though the final section is steep, the climb is worth the effort. The view from the top takes in the town, the Firth of Forth and its islands, the coastline of Fife, and the distant skyline of Edinburgh.
