The Lantern of the North.

Moray has two remarkable religious buildings. In Elgin, the great ruined cathedral, once called the Lantern of the North, still has its twin towers and a fine chapter house. In a quiet glen nearby, a medieval monastery founded in 1230 is home to monks again, and visitors are welcome to sit in peace. Both are beautiful in any weather, and both are quiet places to spend an hour.

Deskford Kirk.

It might not have a roof these days, but the modest ruin of Deskford Kirk plays home to an intricately carved Gothic sacrament house, dating back to 1551. The surrounding churchyard has a number of intriguing gravestones and memorials.

A bishop of Moray called Elgin Cathedral the ornament of the realm and the glory of the kingdom.

Alexander Bur held the see from 1362 to 1397, and that is how he wrote about the building in his care. Work on it had begun in the first half of the 1200s. The octagonal chapter house, added late in that century, still holds its reading lectern and a riot of carved beasts and faces cut into the stone. The rest of what he was describing is the shell standing over the gravestones here.
