Lochaber

Malt from Lochy Bridge to Drimnin.

Lochaber's distilleries sit far apart, and each one makes a good reason for a drive. On the edge of Fort William, whisky has been made since 1825 with water that runs off the north face of Ben Nevis. Halfway along the Ardnamurchan peninsula, a small, modern distillery at Glenbeg makes peated and unpeated malts, and its labels carry the coordinates of the lighthouse. At the end of the long road through Morvern, an independent distillery at Drimnin uses organic barley and runs on renewable energy. Tours welcome beginners as warmly as whisky lovers. Book ahead, and bring a driver for the single-track roads.
