Silver sand at Morar, black on Canna.

Lochaber's beaches face west to the islands, and the evening light on them is lovely. Along the old coast road between Arisaig and Morar, one pale bay follows another, with Rum, Eigg and Skye out on the horizon. At the far tip of Ardnamurchan, a string of bays and tall dunes lies beyond the crater of an ancient volcano. On Knoydart, a short walk from Inverie pier brings you to a shore looking out to Rum, with otters on the river. Over on Canna, a quiet bay of black volcanic sand has its own snorkel trail. Sanna has little more than a car park, so bring everything you need.

That gentleness, with the feeling of being completely unspoilt, is what she finds so magical. 'Like you’ve uncovered a precious jewel by turning up a rock'. Her favourite walks climb Ben Laga behind Borradill, and follow the coast from Portuairk to the white sands of Sanna Beach. In midsummer it doesn't get dark until almost midnight, so a day out there is a long, golden one.
