You don't need to look hard for a good coffee on Skye. There are coffee shacks by the shore, a container on a family croft, a pop-up in a yurt at a sheepskin tannery and one of the island's oldest bakeries, all brewing it properly. Grab one to take on a drive, or sit with a pastry and watch the weather change over the water. Many are small and seasonal, so check the opening days, and bring some cash in case the signal drops.

Dunvegan Bakery, in Dunvegan on the Isle of Skye, has served locals and passers-by since 1870, which makes it the island's oldest bakery.

More than 150 years on, the long-standing bakehouse still makes everything on site, from breads and rolls to pies and pastries. There is a coffee shop alongside, so you can sit down with your bake rather than take it away. Dunvegan is also home to Dunvegan Castle, the seat of the mighty Clan MacLeod since the 13th century and one of Skye's big historical draws, with decorated interiors, princely gardens and no shortage of stirring stories to tell. A morning at the castle and a stop at the bakery make an easy day out in that corner of the island.

Seren and Lorenz, the couple behind Lean to Coffee at Ashaig, near Broadford on the Isle of Skye, made their café in a ruin on Seren's father's croft.

The couple knew they wanted to bring their love of coffee to Skye, and the setting itself gave them the idea. Their way with coffee had been honed while travelling in Australia and Canada, and Lorenz brought something of his own childhood with him. As Seren says, 'Lorenz, having grown up in Australia, was not afraid to embrace the idea of bringing the outdoor living vibe to the Highlands'. The result is outdoor seating in roofless rooms, with bare stone walls and eaves hung with dried local flowers. On fine mornings, red sunrises blaze over the hills behind the croft, and it is hard for them to pull away, but there is always coffee to make.
