Getting around

2 minute read

Getting there Muck is served by the Caledonian MacBrayne (CalMac) ferry from Mallaig, as part of the Small Isles service. It is often the first or last stop on the route, which also includes Eigg, Rùm, and Canna. In summer, the privately-owned Arisaig Marine also runs a passenger ferry service to Muck. It is absolutely essential to check the timetables carefully, as sailings can be infrequent and are highly dependent on the weather and tides. Booking is strongly advised.

Getting around Visitors are not permitted to bring cars to the Isle of Muck. This is an island for walking. A single concrete track runs from the pier at Port Mòr across the island to Gallanach. Other paths are grassy tracks. The island’s small size means that you can walk to any part of it within an hour or so.

Public Transport There is no public transport on Muck. The only way to get around is on your own two feet.

Planning & Practicalities A visit to Muck requires a degree of self-sufficiency. Waterproofs and sturdy walking boots are essential, as the weather can change quickly. It is vital to bring any necessary provisions with you, as the small shop has a limited range. There are no cash machines on the island. Mobile phone reception is very patchy. A good midge repellent and a head net are essential companions during the summer months to ensure you can fully enjoy the tranquil evenings.

Electric Vehicle Charging points As visitors cannot bring cars to the island, there is no public EV charging infrastructure.
