Inverness: Areas

Inverness is a compact city, with its main features and surrounding attractions conveniently grouped.

The City Centre The heart of Inverness is a busy and walkable area centred around the High Street and the Victorian Market. This is the main hub for shopping and dining. Overlooking the centre from its perch above the river is Inverness Castle. While the castle building itself currently houses the courts, its grounds offer a superb viewpoint over the city and the River Ness. The nearby Inverness Museum and Art Gallery provides a great introduction to the history and culture of the Highlands.

The River Ness & Islands The River Ness flows through the middle of the city, and its banks are good for walking. Victorian footbridges connect the city centre to the west bank. A walk leads south from the centre to the Ness Islands, a group of wooded islets in the middle of the river, linked by Victorian suspension bridges. It is quiet out there, and feels a long way from the city streets.

The Historic Outskirts: Culloden & Clava Just a short drive east of Inverness lies a landscape full of history. Culloden Battlefield is one of Scotland’s most poignant and important historic sites. The award-winning visitor centre tells the story of the 1745 Jacobite Rising, and a walk across the moor passes the clan gravestones. Just a mile away are the Clava Cairns, a well-preserved group of Bronze Age burial cairns and standing stones, far older than the battlefield.
