Mackintosh, modern art and old masters.

Glasgow is a city of artists, and its galleries show it. Find contemporary art in a tobacco merchant's mansion in the Merchant City, old masters and Dalí in the great Kelvingrove museum, and a house designed by Mackintosh in 1901 and finally built in a park ninety years later. Independent galleries show living Scottish artists too. Many are free. Look out for the giant murals on gable ends as you walk between them.

Gallery of Modern Art.

Sitting pretty behind heavy Doric columns on Royal Exchange Square, Scotland’s most visited art museum – universally known as GoMA – plays home to a brilliant and far-reaching collection of modern and contemporary art. Don’t just take our word for it: in 2021, at the European Museum Academy’s inaugural Art Museum Award, GoMA’s ground-breaking exhibits saw it named in third place. Local and international artists are both well represented.

A traffic cone is thought to have sat on the head of the Duke of Wellington's statue in Glasgow since at least the 1980s.

Members of the public have been putting it back for decades on the statue outside the Gallery of Modern Art, in Royal Exchange Square. In 2013 Glasgow City Council proposed a £65,000 restoration that would have doubled the height of the plinth. The plan met strong opposition: more than 10,000 people signed an online petition against it, a rally was held, and the council withdrew it. The cone stayed, and in June 2023 the artist Banksy called the statue his favourite work of art in the UK.
