Fife

Walled gardens, woods and snowdrops.

Fife's gardens are a real treat, from the first snowdrops of the year right through to the colours of autumn. You'll find walled gardens behind old castles, terraced gardens that have been growing for centuries, a woodland estate famous for its snowdrops, and a cheerful little garden planted in old wellington boots on a harbour slipway. Many have a café or a tearoom close by, and most are easy to combine with a castle, a village or a walk on the coast. Take your time, and go on a bright day.

Parts of Aberdour Castle in Fife, among them its kitchen, stables and gallery, were used as filming locations for Outlander.

The castle's real story is every bit as dramatic. Over four hundred years it grew from a small hall house into a 15th-century tower house, and it was extended again in the 17th century. Three generations of noble families lived there, among them James Douglas, 4th Earl of Morton, Regent of Scotland. A fire in the late 17th century and a second in 1715, when government soldiers were stationed there during the Jacobite Rising, did great damage, and in time it fell into disrepair. Today Historic Environment Scotland looks after it, and you can still see the painted Renaissance ceiling of heraldry, fruit and foliage in the East range.
