Caithness

Tombs, stones and the herring days.

History in Caithness runs back thousands of years. On a lonely moor stand two Neolithic chambered tombs more than five thousand years old, and you can crawl inside. Nearby, about two hundred small standing stones are set in rows down a low hillside, for reasons no one knows. In Wick, the heritage centre tells the much more recent story of the herring boom. Bring a torch for the tombs.
