Arboretums and walled gardens.

Gardens flourish in the soft climate of the Tweed valley. There's a great arboretum near Stobo, part of the Royal Botanic Garden, and walled gardens by the river near Peebles with restored glasshouses. A peaceful walled garden in Melrose grows fruit and vegetables among its scented borders, and the gardens of a ducal castle at Kelso are beautiful in summer. Visit in spring for blossom, or autumn for colour.

The great castle of the Dukes of Roxburghe above the Tweed at Kelso, begun in the 1720s, with a walled garden and grounds open all year.

Kailzie Gardens.

Making the scenic drive between Peebles and Traquair even more appealing is this rambling Tweed Valley attraction, with 15 acres of burn-threaded woodland (don’t miss the winter snowdrops) surrounding a spectacular walled garden, complete with rose beds, laburnum arches and a fine example of a classic Mackenzie & Moncur glasshouse. The grounds also provide prime osprey-breeding territory.

Inside the walled garden at Kailzie, near Peebles, stands one of the first glasshouses Mackenzie and Moncur built.

Kailzie Gardens lies beside the Kailzie Burn, near Peebles in the Borders, around a walled garden of the early 1800s. One of the earliest Mackenzie and Moncur glasshouses stands inside the walls, full of fuchsias and pelargoniums. Red squirrels and otters live on the estate.

The month Mary Queen of Scots spent in Jedburgh in 1566 was a turning point in her life.

The Mary Queen of Scots Visitor Centre is a 16th-century tower house on Queen Street, in the centre of Jedburgh. It tells the story of the month Mary spent in the town in 1566 through paintings, objects and textiles linked to her. Jedburgh's pear trees grow in the garden, and entry is free.
