Aberdeenshire

Lighthouses, prisons and the sea.

Aberdeenshire's museums are full of character. Climb to the lamp of Scotland's first mainland lighthouse at Fraserburgh, walk the cell blocks of what was once the country's toughest jail, or learn how the oil came ashore at Aberdeen's museum of the sea. In the villages, volunteers keep small museums in an old lifeboat house, a railway station and a cattle mart. There's a transport museum full of old cars, too. Most are easy to fit round a walk, and ideal for a wet afternoon.
