The National Trust for Scotland has finished conservation work on the Bavarian summerhouse at Brodick Castle, and it is open to visitors again this season. It was built in the mid-19th century as a wedding gift for Princess Marie of Baden, who had married William, the 11th Duke of Hamilton.

Four were put up on the estate. This is the only one left. Set into the sandstone rockface above Brodick Bay, it is decorated with rhododendron stems, and the recent work covered that stemwork, new heritage glass in the windows, fresh latches and repairs to the facetted slate roof. Historic Environment Scotland's Partnership Fund paid for it.

Still to come is the interior ceiling, patterned with pinecones by Bavarian craftsmen. Marie hosted her cousin Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte here more than once.
