The Scottish Nature Garden that filled the stage at the Glasgow 2026 opening ceremony is being kept rather than thrown away. It covers 200 square metres, 15 metres across, and holds 2,400 plants in 18 movable trays weighing roughly a tonne each.

Amalie White designed it with the plantsman Jamie Butterworth, and the brief was coastal path, alpine ground and loch shore rather than bedding. Butterworth, who presents on Gardeners' World, reckons it may be the biggest garden jigsaw anyone has attempted. White drew the stage itself from Scotland's textile industry and Glasgow's shipbuilding.

The whole thing is on wheels, so it has already been rolled out to Scotstoun, and a permanent Scottish home will be named once the Games are over. The wooden batons that 74 nations and territories decorated and planted in it are going into a cabinet at the Kelvingrove Park live site.
