Kisimul Castle reopens on Barra after years of repairs

Kisimul Castle is open again. The Macneil stronghold sits on a rock in Castlebay and getting out to it means a boat from the jetty, which is half the appeal. Historic Environment Scotland has spent years on the repairs. New tower stair, a re-roofed chapel, the Great Hall ceiling stabilised so people can stand in it, and a replaced high-level walkway that looks back over the bay to Barra. Some of the money came from the Clan Macneil Association of America. Tours last an hour and run on selected dates until 30 September. Hard hats provided. Book ahead. They're adding slots as the season goes on.
