Plans are under discussion to significantly expand woodland cover around Ben Nevis in the Scottish Highlands. A report described the proposals as potentially the “biggest shift in land use in a lifetime”, with ambitions to substantially increase tree planting in the area.

It is part of a wider push across Scotland for more woodland, to store carbon and tackle climate change and the loss of wildlife.

Quadrupling the woodland around Ben Nevis would bring more habitat for wildlife and more for visitors, though there is still debate over how the land should be used.
