Aonach Mor

A Munro of 1,220 metres, number 8 of the 282.

The hill

Aonach Mor is the eighth highest of the 282 Munros, and it keeps grand company.

Aonach Beag is about a kilometre and a half to the south, Carn Mor Dearg much the same to the south-west, and Ben Nevis only about three kilometres away.

It is also the hill of Nevis Range, seven miles from Fort William, whose gondola travels up the north face from 100 metres to a top station at 650. Under snow this is ski ground.

The avalanche service speaks of "the Aonach Mor range", and names it with Ben Nevis as the core of its Lochaber forecast.

Starts from
Nevis Range, at Torlundy, whose gondola hill walkers use to explore Aonach Mòr. For the way to the summit, the distance and the time, follow the route description and the map.
The gondola
In October 2026 the first went up at 9.30am, the last at 3.45pm, and the last came down at 4pm, every day the weather allowed. The times change with the season, and it can close without notice. When wind stops it, the top station's height is a 1.5-hour hike from the car park on the path beneath the gondola line. The summit, at 1,220 metres, is far above the top station: plan the way down without the gondola.
Under snow
This is ski ground. Nevis Range asks walkers always to keep to the side of ski runs and along fence lines in single file, never on tow tracks or fresh grooming. The avalanche service counts this range as core ground of its Lochaber forecast.
Summit
Grid reference NN 193 729
Car park
Nevis Range Mountain Resort, Torlundy, PH33 6SQ: give a satnav the resort's name, as the postcode alone is not exact. In October 2026 its parking page gave £6 a day, paid online or at its machines, and its gondola page £5.
Bus
From Fort William, Nevis Range recommends Shiel Buses' route 41. Check the times with the operator.
Toilets and food
Nevis Range has toilets and a café at the foot: in October 2026 the Trails End Café and Bar was open from 8am to 10pm every day. The Snowgoose at the top station keeps the gondola's hours.

Once at the gondola top station you are in a high mountain environment with all the associated dangers including avalanche, cornice collapse, unstable snow, ice and rock.Nevis Range, which runs the gondola, on its page for winter climbers
Before you go

Carry

  • A paper map and a compass, and the skill to use them
  • Waterproofs, warm layers, hat and gloves
  • Food and drink
  • A head torch, a whistle and a first aid kit
  • A survival bag
  • Boots with a good grip

Under snow and ice this is a different day, with short light and the risk of avalanche. It needs an ice axe, crampons, winter boots and the skill to use them.

If something goes wrong

  • Dial 999, ask for the police, then mountain rescue
  • Give a six-figure grid reference: the summit is NN 193 729
  • Say how many are hurt, how many are with you, and your number
  • Register to text 999 before the day: text the word register to 999

The summit is optional. Turning back is the right decision whenever the cloud, the wind or the light say so.
