The Dinnie Stones Gathering
Introduction
Each August, Potarch Green hosts Dinnie Day—The Gathering—a stonelifting event centred on the Dinnie Stones, two granite boulders weighing 332 kg in total. Named after Donald Dinnie, who carried them across Potarch Bridge in 1860, the challenge now draws competitors from across Scotland and beyond. Athletes test grip and endurance in events including the original stone carry, shoulder lifts, medleys and timed holds. The day typically opens with a piper-led procession and includes distinct women’s and men’s contests often named after fellow competitors. Entry is free to spectate, with simple food stalls and Potarch Cafe nearby.
