Scapa Flow Museum
How a natural harbour on Hoy became the centre of the naval war, twice.
Scapa Flow is a great sheet of sheltered water ringed by islands, and for two world wars it was where the British fleet lay.
The museum at Lyness, in the old naval oil pumping station on Hoy, tells both halves of that: the ships, the scuttling of the German High Seas Fleet in 1919, the sinking of the Royal Oak in 1939, and the other story, of what it did to Orkney to have tens of thousands of service people arrive on islands with far fewer people of their own, and what they left behind when they went. Entry is free. The ferry to Hoy is part of the day.
