The lifeboat Thomas McCunn, in the shed she was launched from.

Welcome

The Thomas McCunn sits in her own boathouse at Brims on South Walls, still seaworthy, in the place she was launched from for almost thirty years.

The museum around her tells the story of the Longhope lifeboats and the men who crewed them, and it does not step around the night of 17 March 1969, when the Longhope lifeboat of the day, the TGB, went out into a south-easterly gale and was found the next day upturned off Torness with her whole crew of eight lost. Seven of them came from the same small community. It is run by the islanders themselves and it is quietly one of the most affecting rooms in Orkney.
