Chno Dearg, a broad grassy hill with a rounded summit, seen from Stob Coire Sgriodain under a pale blue sky.

Chno Dearg

A Munro of 1,046 metres, the higher of the pair east of Loch Treig, climbed from Fersit at the end of the Loch Treig road.

Welcome

Chno Dearg, 1,046 metres, is the higher of the two Munros on the east side of Loch Treig, above the head of the loch and Fersit.

Its partner, Stob Coire Sgriodain, is about two kilometres to the west, and many walkers climb the two together. Corrour Estate counts it among its six Munros and gives the name simply as Red Hill.

Most walkers start at Fersit, at the end of the Loch Treig road off the A86, and climb its long, grassy northern slopes. Corrour Estate calls stalking a vital part of its habitat management, so follow any signs on the day. No avalanche forecast covers the hill: the Lochaber avalanche forecasters have called the hills east of Loch Treig "no man's land". Do not count on a toilet, a shop, fuel or a phone signal near the hill. Choose a day with a good forecast, and carry a map, a compass and warm clothes.

The Daily for 4 November, from Scotland with love. A pink sandstone castle bristling with conical turrets and a Union Jack flag rises above a gravel forecourt, autumn-tinged ivy climbing one wing beside cannon displayed on the lawn.
