Scottish Borders

Jedburgh – Inside the Abbey and Lunch on the High Street

A day.

The route

Jedburgh Abbey is one of the four great abbeys founded in the Borders in the 1100s, and its tall roofless church still rises over the middle of the town.

A visit goes from the treasures in its visitor centre to the nave and the great rose window at its west end. Lunch is a short walk away on the High Street.

The day

Jedburgh

A carved shrine fragment older than the abbey, the ruins of the canons' cloister and their great church, then lunch in the town.

  1. Jedburgh Abbey

    Jedburgh Abbey

    An attraction

King David founded a priory here in 1138, and by 1154 it was an abbey of Augustinian canons; in 1285 Alexander III married Yolande de Dreux in its church. The visit starts in the visitor centre, where upstairs are a carved piece of a shrine from the 700s and an ivory comb, found near where the chapter house was later built. A walkway leads on through what is left of the canons' buildings and the cloister, now a garden, into the church, the work of the best part of a hundred years. An audio guide is available.

If it rains

The visitor centre and lunch are under a roof; the abbey church is open to the sky.
