Callendar House – A Free, Dry Morning in a Falkirk Château

A few hours.

The route

Callendar House in Falkirk looks like a French château dropped into a Scottish park, and it's free to go in.

There's the story of the house and the families who lived here, changing exhibitions drawn from the local museum's collection, and a vast Georgian kitchen. Lunch is in the house's own tearoom, with a meal deal for children, and if the rain stops there's a Roman-themed play park outside.

Before you go

  1. Book accommodation nearby

If you are staying over: here are ours nearest where the day starts and ends.

The day

Falkirk

A rainy morning spent exploring a grand old house for free, finding the great kitchen downstairs, then lunch together in the tearoom.

About two and a half hours

  1. Callendar House

    Callendar House

Park free in the main car park, reached along Seaton Place, with disabled parking in front of the house. Callendar House opens every day except Tuesday, from 10am to 5pm, with last admission at 4.30pm, and it's free to go in. On the ground floor you'll find the story of the house and the families who lived here, and the huge kitchen of 1825, said to be the largest in Scotland. The exhibitions change every few months, with objects from the area's museum collection, from Roman pottery to Falkirk's industrial past, and art in the Park Gallery and on the second floor. The house is fully accessible for wheelchairs, but its lift is out of service at the time of writing, so ask at the desk before heading upstairs.

  2. The tearoom at Callendar House

    Lunch

The tearoom is in the house, with views over the park, and you don't need to book. There's soup of the day with a baguette, oatcakes or a savoury scone, homemade sandwiches and baguettes, scones and home baking, with gluten-free choices. Children can have the kids' meal deal of a ham or cheese sandwich, a tangerine, a cupcake and a carton of juice, and there are Mackie's ice cream tubs. If the rain clears afterwards, the Roman-themed play park in Callendar Park is free.

If it rains

All of it is under a roof; the play park outside is only for when the rain stops.
