Tain Golf Club – A Course Laid Out by Old Tom Morris
A day.
The route
Old Tom Morris laid out the course at Tain in 1889, and the club says his touch lingers on eight of its holes.
It winds through heather and gorse on links and heath beside the Dornoch Firth, with the hills of Easter Ross behind. Afterwards, the clubhouse bar looks down on the 18th green.

Tain Golf Club
An attraction
Tain Golf Club is on Chapel Road, with free parking at the clubhouse. Check in at the pro shop at least ten minutes before your tee time; clubs, trolleys and buggies can be hired, and a caddie costs £60 a round. Dress is smart casual. A statue of Old Tom Morris stands by the 1st tee. The opening hole is Road, a par 4 with a blind approach. The 11th, Alps, is the club's signature hole, with a blind second shot over the hills to a long, narrow green. At the short 17th, Black Bridge, the river guards the front and right of a small green. The club asks a four-ball to get round in under four hours. Afterwards, Craig's Bar & Restaurant in the clubhouse has large windows over the 18th green. Ring the club on 01862 892314 to check when the kitchen is serving.
If it rains
In heavy rain or a gale, ring the pro shop on 01862 893313 before you set out. The clubhouse lounge is under cover.
