January in Glasgow has one good reason to go out, and this is it.
MusicDumfries is getting a carnival of its own this winter, and it sounds like a lovely way to brighten the end of January. The Dumfries & Galloway Carnival is a brand-new celebration made by the people of the region, with schools, artists, performers and community groups all taking part. Across the weekend the town centre fills with light installations, live music, food and drink, lantern making and things for families to do. The big moment is the parade on Saturday evening, when hundreds of local people set off from Dumfries Academy at 5pm and wind through George Street, Buccleuch Street and up the High Street in costume and with music. It runs from Friday 29 to Sunday 31 January 2027, and there are viewing spots along the route, including quiet areas and space for wheelchairs.
