Where to stay in Outer Hebrides
Light is the first thing you notice out here, on a chain of islands at the western edge of Scotland with nothing beyond but the Atlantic. The Outer Hebrides run from the Butt of Lewis down to Barra and Vatersay, joined by causeways and short ferries, and each island has a character of its own. You'll find white sand and turquoise water at Luskentyre, the Calanais Stones on their ridge above Loch Roag and thatched blackhouses by the sea at Gearrannan. Harris Tweed is still made on looms at home, you'll hear Gaelic in everyday life, and on Barra the plane from Glasgow lands on the beach. When the weather allows, boats run out to St Kilda.

Harris Hideaway
Harris Hideaway is a house for two dug into the clifftop above the Sound of Taransay, with walls of natural rock and a roof of local peat and wild grasses. Every room faces the sea, and a sweep of floor-to-ceiling glass looks across to Taransay and towards the beaches at Luskentyre. Inside it is calm and warm, with a wood-burning stove and oak floors. There is a sauna with a sea window, a wave-shaped bath and a copper tub outside for the stars. It is for adults only, and dogs are welcome. Book well ahead.
