Where to stay in Ayrshire

On a clear evening on the Ayrshire coast, the sun goes down behind Arran across the water. This is Burns country, and in Alloway you can walk from the cottage where he was born to the Auld Kirk and the Brig o' Doon, where Tam o' Shanter outran the witches. Along the shore there are long sandy beaches at Troon and Ayr, the links at Prestwick where the Open began, and Culzean Castle on its clifftop above the sea. Inland you'll find quiet farming villages, Loudoun Hill and the green hills round Straiton. Up the coast, Largs has ice cream on the front and the little ferry to Cumbrae, and the big boats sail from Ardrossan to Arran. Pack a picnic and take the coast road south.

Talli House

Talli House is an old stable turned design-led retreat, set in five acres of meadow near the village of Dunlop. Inside it is all wood, linen and light, with two king bedrooms and spa-style bathrooms, one with a Japanese soaking tub. A wood-burning stove keeps things cosy, and the glass-fronted living space opens onto a covered veranda for coffee at sunrise or a glass of wine in the evening. Glasgow is about half an hour away, yet your only neighbours are deer and trees. It sleeps four, which makes it perfect for two couples or a small family.
