Beaches of Scotland
Ten beaches from more than 11,000 miles of coast.
Words by Ben Lerwill · Photographs by Nils Leonhardt
Here’s a statistic that might give you pause. Scotland and its islands have a collective total of more than 11,000 miles of coastline; a figure which, for context, is also the distance between Edinburgh and New Zealand. It means that when exploring the Scottish coast, you’ll uncover a whole cosmos of curving bays, craggy headlands and – yes – impossibly glorious beaches. Speak to regular visitors, in fact, and this is one of the first things you’ll hear mentioned. Up here, where the otters dive, the hills brood and the waves crash, the beaches are incredible.
As you’d expect, these beaches come in almost every shape and size imaginable. From tucked-away coves to horizon-hogging seashores, Scotland is home to some of the most spectacular and secluded beaches you’ll encounter anywhere. In this guide, we’re shining a light on ten of the very best. Some are found on the mainland, others fringe islands, but all of them offer that hard-to-define magic that Scotland excels at: the sense that you’ve found somewhere special, a place where the world slows, the sky broadens and your worries fade into the tide. We hope they inspire you.
