Seaprobe Atlantis, the glass-bottom boat from Kyle
Kyle of Lochalsh

Seaprobe Atlantis – Under the Skye Bridge and Under the Waves

A few hours, from Kyle pontoon and back.

The route

Seaprobe Atlantis is a glass-bottomed boat that sits half under the water, so you can watch the kelp forests of Loch Alsh drift past the windows without getting wet.

It sails from Kyle, out under the Skye Bridge to the seals on Seal Island, with the hills of Skye all round. It suits all ages.

Kyle

An hour or two on Loch Alsh, up on deck for the seals and the bridge, then downstairs to the windows for the starfish and the swaying kelp.

About one and a half hours

  1. Seaprobe Atlantis

    Seaprobe Atlantis

    An attraction

Seaprobe Atlantis sails from Kyle pontoon, on the mainland below the Skye Bridge, every day from Easter to the end of October. Its ticket office, gift shop and café are at the traffic lights in Kyle, with the car park beside them: coming off the bridge, turn right at the second set of lights. Its signs show how long you can park. Be at the pontoon ten minutes before your sailing. The boat is semi-submersible, with a gallery of windows below the waterline. The one-hour trip goes out under the bridge to the seals on Seal Island and a bird colony, past a ruined castle, then down into the kelp forest, where crabs, fish, starfish, urchins and jellyfish drift past the glass. The two-hour trip adds the wartime wreck of HMS Port Napier and a salmon farm, but it needs a low tide, so some days only the hour runs. Keep watch on deck for otters and porpoises too. At the time of writing the hour is £28 for adults and £18 for children of 4 to 12, and two hours £40 and £28; under-1s go free. Sailing times change every day with the tide, so check the timetable, and book online, at the ticket office or by text on 07814 784402. Dogs are welcome on deck but not in the gallery. A wheelchair can go down the pontoon ramp, and the crew will carry it on board for anyone who can manage a few assisted steps, but the gallery is down stairs.

If it rains

Half the trip is downstairs at the underwater windows, out of the weather, and Loch Alsh is sheltered.
