1 day in Royal Deeside
A day by car, from Ballater to Ballater.
Written by Jack Cairney
As someone lucky enough to call Royal Deeside home, I’ve put together this itinerary to help you make the most of a day in this incredible corner of Scotland. Whether you’re drawn by the history, the natural beauty, or the sense of calm that comes with being here, I promise you’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for the area.
Pick your dates, and who is coming, and every stop will say whether it is open that day, and what it is like with children, a dog or a wheelchair.

The day

Ballater
An attraction
Start your day with breakfast at The Bothy, a favourite spot for locals and visitors alike. Their freshly prepared dishes made with local ingredients are the perfect way to fuel up. After breakfast, take some time to explore Ballater. Be sure to visit Ballater Antiques, where you’ll find a lovely selection of unique items. Next, head over to The Old Royal Station, an iconic landmark in the village. Built in 1866 to serve Queen Victoria and the Royal Family, it has been beautifully restored after a fire in 2015. Inside, you’ll find The Rothesay Rooms, now located in the station, featuring both a café and restaurant. Take a moment to explore the exhibits, including the timeline of the station’s history and the replica royal train carriage.
The rest of this day is for members.
5 more stops, what to do at each, and the drive between them. Members read every one of our days, and the magazine.
