The Cock of Arran Walk

Seven miles of coastline past fossil millipede tracks, old coal mines and Ossian's Cave.

Words by Hidden Scotland · Photographs by Hidden Scotland

This demanding seven-mile circular takes you across spectacular coastline and fallen boulders to sights such as Lochranza slate quarry with 540-million-year-old rocks, former coastal coal mines and, stippling a sea boulder, the fossilised tracks of an ancient millipede. Rather unlike what we may today think of as a millipede, Arthropleura could grow up to two metres long, making it the largest invertebrate that ever lived on land. Also look out for Ossian’s Cave in the sandstone cliffs, which contains a carving of a three-masted ship that may date to the 18th century.
