The Clearances told at Bettyhill.
Sutherland's museums tell the story of its people and its land. In Bettyhill, the white former parish church of Farr is given over to the Highland Clearances, when families were moved off Strathnaver to make way for sheep. Upstairs there's a room for Clan Mackay, and a carved Pictish stone stands in the graveyard outside. At Lairg, a free visitor centre by Loch Shin covers the water, the land and the people of the area, with wood carvings in its gardens and walks from the door. Pair Bettyhill with a walk on Farr Beach, just down the hill.
