Stirlingshire
Bruce's field and Wallace's tower.
The wars of independence are written all over Stirling. On the Abbey Craig, the Victorian tower raised to William Wallace keeps his great sword inside, and 246 steps lead up to the Crown and its view. Two miles south, Robert the Bruce sits in bronze on his warhorse on the field where he won in 1314. On the shore of Loch Lomond, the church at Luss was built in memory of a laird drowned in the loch. Stirling's own museum and the film cars of Bo'ness fill a wet day. The Bannockburn visitor centre is closed until mid-2028, but the grounds are open every day.
