Ross and Cromarty
Pictish stones on Rosemarkie High Street.
The museums of Ross and Cromarty are small and full of old stories. On the High Street of Rosemarkie, a white house keeps the carved stones left behind by the Picts, with a tall red cross-slab covered in knotwork at its centre. The work of the artist George Bain hangs alongside. In Tain, in the peaceful churchyard of St Duthus, the town museum follows the medieval pilgrims who came to the shrine of St Duthac, King James IV among them. The Clan Ross Centre is there too. Each one takes an hour or so, so pair it with a walk by the sea.
