Perthshire

Walks through woods and glens.

Perthshire is wonderful walking country, with paths through ancient woods, along rivers and up into the hills. Follow waymarked trails through the forest above a long Highland loch, wander a riverside walk laid out two centuries ago, or explore a wooded glen right on the edge of a town. Most are gentle enough for the whole family and easy to reach from the towns, and the colours in autumn are glorious. Pack a waterproof, as the weather can change, and finish with tea and cake nearby.

Laurie Goodlad and her family walked the Birks of Aberfeldy, a woodland trail past the Falls of Moness in Perthshire, in just over an hour.

‘We began the day with a walk to the Birks of Aberfeldy; a circular woodland walk upriver towards the famous ‘Birks’ (from the Scots for birch trees) overlooking the impressive Falls of Moness and Moness gorge. The walk begins on the western outskirts of Aberfeldy and is well signposted, with plenty of space for parking. The walk itself is 2.3 miles (4.7 km) in total, and we completed it in just over an hour with our nine and five-year-old.’

On a Friday afternoon in Aberfeldy, Highland Perthshire, the artist Zanna Wilson walks by the River Tay to Weem, crossing Wade's Bridge or looping back past Castle Menzies.

Zanna, who has lived in Aberfeldy since 2008 and runs the Watermill Gallery there, gives two ways to go. You can walk directly to Weem via Wade's Bridge and the avenue, or follow the river towards Kenmore, looping back through Weem meadow, past Castle Menzies and through the village. Pick up a picnic in town and enjoy it on the way. For a shorter option, wander through Aberfeldy Golf Course to Victoria Park, which also has a bowling green and tennis courts. For a fresh perspective on the river, she also suggests trying something on the water, and she is especially fond of kayaking and swimming.
