Country inns and coaching houses.

Some of the best food in Perthshire is served in its old country inns. Look out for a coaching inn on a village green, an inn in a former corn mill in Pitlochry, and a country inn beneath an old church in a quiet village, each with real ales and hearty, seasonal cooking. They're perfect for a long lunch after a walk or a relaxed dinner. Book a table at the weekends, as locals love them too.

Fraser Potter rebuilt The Taybank in Dunkeld, a pub once owned by Dougie MacLean, who wrote the folk tune 'Caledonia', while training to row the Atlantic.

Fraser did it during the pandemic, almost single-handedly, while training with four friends to row for charity. He turned the pub's car park into one of the biggest beer gardens in Scotland, with circus-style awnings sloping down to the River Tay. Upstairs he converted the five rooms himself, doing all the joinery. He kept the old-school bar with its stacks of instruments for live music sessions, and most of the herbs and veg for the first-floor restaurant are grown in the walled garden he restored. Beside the river there are now long-table supper clubs, an outdoor sauna he built, and outdoor film screenings in summer.
