Orkney

Weavers, jewellers and island books.

Orkney's makers take their colours from the islands themselves. At the far end of a South Ronaldsay road, a family weaves large pieces by hand in the greens and greys of the Flow, and shows them alongside prints and rugs. At Tankerness, a jeweller's enamels in sea blues and hill ochres fill a converted kirk, with a café for lunch. In Kirkwall, the islands' newspaper runs a bookshop on Albert Street, full of maps, local history and nature books. Give the drive out towards Hoxa Head an afternoon of its own.
