Old inns from Ratho to Quality Street.

The inns around Edinburgh are old places with good kitchens and plenty of history. At Ratho, on the Union Canal west of the city, an inn by an old stone bridge serves Scottish produce and has live music. Balerno's village inn was restored in 2019 and has a sunny garden with heated bothies. Near Linlithgow, a family-owned inn has been known for its Scotch beef steaks and its wine for forty years. In North Berwick, a red sandstone pub a few steps from the harbour serves seafood and home cooking every day. Some have rooms, so you can stay the night after dinner.

Jason Davidson, whose parents founded the Champany steakhouse with rooms near Linlithgow in West Lothian, says overnight guests are treated as part of the family.

As he puts it, 'We want them to enjoy the comfort of a home away from home, with fantastic food, wine and whisky'. Guests can arrive early, so there is time for a bath before getting ready for dinner. The steakhouse is the grand occasion, with carefully chosen wines to go with the steaks, and alongside it the Chop and Ale House serves more casual dishes such as burgers. The bedrooms look out over the gardens, and if you are not too full in the morning, breakfast is cooked to order.
