Bridge to Nowhere and Byres Hill tower.

Lothian's oddities are small, and each comes with a story. On the sands of Belhaven Bay by Dunbar, a little metal footbridge crosses a stream to the beach. At high tide the sand vanishes and the bridge stands alone in the sea, which is how it got its name. On the promenade at Portobello, in Edinburgh itself, three ornate pillars of Coade stone, an artificial stone fired like pottery, stand in a garden. Above Haddington, a sandstone tower of the 1820s crowns Byres Hill, with 132 steps inside to a view over East Lothian. Go to Belhaven at high tide, and take a torch for the tower's dim stair.
