The long ways out of Fort William.

Fort William is where some of Scotland's long-distance walks begin and end. The West Highland Way finishes here after 96 miles from Milngavie, the Great Glen Way sets off for Inverness along the Caledonian Canal and Loch Ness, and the East Highland Way heads for Aviemore by Loch Laggan. They can be walked as organised trips, and on the West Highland Way a mountain leader comes too, with your bags carried ahead. For a single day, a hill walk circles Buachaille Etive Beag at the head of Glencoe, with big views of its larger neighbour. Pack for every kind of weather, and check the streams before you cross.

Her favourite walks climb Ben Laga behind Borradill, and follow the coast from Portuairk to the white sands of Sanna Beach. In midsummer it doesn't get dark until almost midnight, so a day out there is a long, golden one.
